OSI Community Fellow

Herbert Johson

2009 OSI Community Fellow

At 73, Herbert Johnson was one of the oldest OSI Community Fellows. Born in Cleveland OH, Johnson was known for his charm, wit, and love of storytelling. When he moved to Basilica Place in Baltimore, he quickly became a well-known leader in the community. He worked with other residents to mentor youth through the Woodbourne Center and volunteered for Baltimoreans United in Leadership Development (BUILD). His 2005 fellowship, “No Easy Ridin’ Here: Stories and Recipes of Survival,” a project that aimed to record and preserve the wisdom and stories from seniors in Baltimore combined his love of community as well as storytelling. Johson passed away on March 28, 2011. Read more about his project here.
