Baltimore Action Legal Team strikes blow for transparency in court

Last Thursday, OSI grantee Baltimore Action Legal Team (BALT) struck a blow for transparency as the Court of Special Appeals ruled that the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s investigations into police are in the public interest and the State’s Attorney’s office must comply with BALT’s Public Information Act request and turn the records over. Read the full ruling here.

“The court further faulted Mosby’s office for denying requests to waive $18,000 in administrative fees it wanted to charge for releasing records from investigations of police officers, with the judges calling that decision ‘arbitrary and capricious,'” the Sun reported.

BALT has also garnered attention in recent weeks for its efforts to ensure that Maryland’s Department of Corrections complies with a law that went into effect in July requiring the state to pay home detention fees for many defendants.
