Last week, OSI’s Tara Huffman participated in a Community of Practice conversation hosted by Healthcare for the Homeless on the topic, “Reimagining Restorative Justice through the Lens of Eliminating Structural Racism.”

Other panelists included Baltimore City Police Department Lieutenant Colonel Monique Brown, Baltimore City Councilman John T. Bullock, and Morgan State University Associate Professor Kevin Daniels. Health Care for the Homeless President & CEO Kevin Lindamood moderated the conversation.

Huffman explained the evolution of her thinking on policing, from thinking that the existing system could be reform toward thinking that it must be completely reimagined. “Restorative justice doesn’t ask, ‘what’s the punishment?’ It asks, ‘how has the survivor been impacted, what do they need and what about the person who caused harm?'” she said. “The state is not involved. This should be the default.”
