Dr. Beverly Tatum, author of the landmark book, “Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria? And Other Conversations About Race,” recently released in an expanded 20th Anniversary Edition, talked about the importance of discussing race from an early age in a wide-range conversation with Baltimore City Schools CEO Dr. Sonja Santelises as part of OSI’s Talking About Race series. You can watch the full event below.

Dr. Tatum defines racism as “a system of advantage based on race” and says we have to talk about race to “make the unconscious conscious.” She said that the traditional taboo of discussing race with young people keeps young people from identifying when stereotypes are being used and allows implicit biases to become deeply entrenched.
