Yesterday, the New York Times reported that, in response to criticism of its handling of alleged election-tampering, “Facebook employed a Republican opposition-research firm to discredit activist protesters, in part by linking them to the liberal financier George Soros.”

In response, Patrick Gaspard, president of Open Society Foundations (which was founded by Soros), sent a letter to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg. “It’s been disappointing to see how you have failed to monitor hate and misinformation on Facebook’s platform,” it read in part. “To now learn that you are active in promoting these distortions is beyond the pale.”

At noon today, Gaspard appeared on MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports to discuss the situation further.

Open Society Institute – Baltimore is the only U.S. field office of Open Society Foundations, which works to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable and open to the participation of all people. Last month, OSF President Gaspard gave the keynote address at the final event in OSI-Baltimore’s 20th Anniversary Speakers Series. Watch the full video of the event here.
