This week, the Daily Record announced its 2018 VIP list which included 2014 OSI Community Fellow Van Brooks and 2017 Fellow Shantell Roberts. These awards recognize successful professionals in Maryland under 40. They are selected on the basis of professional accomplishments, community service, and commitment to change.

Brooks used his fellowship to develop the “Yards for Success” program, a flag football program that brings together local law enforcement officers, fire department personnel, and local middle school students that is an expansion of his project Safe Alternative Foundation for Education (SAFE). Last year, he was named director of the Governor’s Office of Service and Volunteerism.

Roberts is using her fellowship to get the Portable Alternative Crib (P.A.C.) as well as information on safe sleeping methods for babies to as many parents as possible. The P.A.C is a lightweight cardboard box that serves as a bassinet.
