The Open Society Foundations (OSF) currently seek a Director of Development for Open Society Institute–Baltimore, starting January 2, 2018. The Director of Development is responsible for developing and implementing a plan to raise approximately $3.5 million annually from individuals and from local and national foundations and corporations to match support provided by the OSF. OSI-Baltimore, the sole field office of OSF’s U.S. Programs, supports a grant making, educational, advocacy and capacity-building program to expand justice and opportunity for Baltimore residents. With support from a range of individual, corporate and foundation investors, its current work focuses on helping Baltimore’s youth succeed, reducing mass incarceration and its social and economic costs, improving access to high quality drug addiction treatment, and building a corps of Community Fellows to bring innovative ideas to Baltimore’s underserved communities (www.osibaltimore.org). A significant amount of the office’s work focuses on policy reform at the state level, increasing opportunity and justice throughout Maryland.
The Director of Development is responsible for all aspects of fundraising and stewardship of donors for OSI-Baltimore. At present, the position is responsible for raising approximately $3.5 million annually from individuals, foundations and corporations, but the office may increase revenue goals in future years. The Director of Development reports to the Director of OSI-Baltimore and oversees a Development Officer for Major Gifts, a Development Officer for Foundations and Corporate Gifts, and a part-time Program Administrative Specialist. Adhering to ethical fundraising practices, he or she is responsible for: developing multi-year and annual fundraising plans; setting goals, strategies, and timelines; identifying and cultivating prospects; preparing proposals and narrative and financial reports; structuring solicitations, including by engaging staff and board members; and often closing gifts. The Director of Development works closely with program staff to identify funding needs and to understand the use and impact of donors’ contributions. He or she also collaborates closely with the Director of Communications to design publications and programs to familiarize prospects and donors with OSI-Baltimore’s goals, activities and impact, encourage investment in OSI-Baltimore’s work, and recognize donors. The Director of Development role may include any or all of the following and/or similar activities:
- craft and oversee an evolving fundraising strategy and work plan to identify and cultivate prospects, solicit funds and steward donors
- establish goals and assignments for development staff and track progress, providing appropriate assistance and professional development
- identify new prospects (individuals, foundations, and corporations)
- prepare and/or oversee the preparation of all letters of inquiry, proposals, narrative and financial reports, appeals, acknowledgements, and related fundraising materials
- organize events to cultivate prospects and to engage and thank investors
- procure and oversee the work of consultants and vendors who support the development program
- record contacts, fundraising activities, cultivation and solicitation results, and pledges and funds received in (Salesforce) database and coordinate with OSF finance staff on a regular basis
- collaborate with OSI-Baltimore program staff to identify funding needs and priorities and to track the impact of donors’ funds
- coordinate with communications staff to develop messages (including website content), written materials and programs to support fundraising efforts
- conduct research and analysis and stay current with trends and effective approaches in the fundraising field in order to revise and improve strategies
- prepare materials to show progress towards goals and to analyze the effectiveness of strategies; schedule at least quarterly meetings with the Board Development Committee
- report to the OSI-Baltimore Board, including its Development Committee, to assess progress, receive guidance, and elicit participation in cultivation and solicitation activities
- develop and manage budget for development activities
- provide leadership as a member of the OSI-Baltimore senior team and participate actively in OSI-Baltimore and Open Society Foundations staff meetings and other organization-wide activities
- ten years of fundraising experience, including five years in a senior leadership position
- experience raising funds for a social justice non-profit organization
- demonstrated leadership and management abilities, including strategy development, budget and financial management, and creative problem solving
- strong instincts, energy and commitment to raising funds to fulfill the mission of OSI-Baltimore
- ability to take a “big picture” approach to the fund development strategy while maintaining a high quality, detail-oriented approach to relationships, communication, and solicitation and stewardship of foundation, corporate and individual donors
- strategic experience, enthusiasm and drive to meet goals
- keen analytic capacity to set goals and measure benchmarks toward achieving them
- sensitivity to the demands on other staff and board members
- ability to provide constructive staff supervision, with a particular focus in helping staff meet fundraising goals
- capacity to maintain clear, compelling and succinct written and oral communications on a consistent basis with Board members, colleagues, and donors
- superior persuasive writing skills appropriate for appeal letters, proposals, narrative reports, etc.
- excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen effectively
- creativity in exploring new sources and high level prospect research skills
- ability to set daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly priorities, maintain a high level of organization of tasks, manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and handle a significant workload
- experience incorporating electronic tools in a fundraising strategy
- excellent analytical and organizational skills and demonstrated ability to develop and implement effective systems, policies and procedures
- high level of self-motivation, at ease working independently, and proven ability to work efficiently under pressure and in a fast-paced environment
- demonstrated ability to use discretion and judgment regarding sensitive and confidential issues
- ability to work constructively and collegially with colleagues at all levels in the hierarchy of the organization as well as with external parties
- strong commitment to inclusion and respect for all colleagues regardless of identity or seniority
